Exploring Tivkat David Messianic Synagogue

Thank you for entering my page!  Right now, you are probably searching to find out more about Jewish beliefs in Jesus.  Perhaps, Messianic Jewish organizations seem attractive to you. According to Tikvat David Messianic Synagogue "Who Are We?" page

"We are a family of Jews, intermarrieds, and non-Jews gathered around these three core principles. Our synagogue is a place to find community, Jewish and Biblical education, and practical help in spiritual living."

Sounds great, right! There is only one catch-Tikvat David is not a Jewish group at all, but completely Christian in every way! It was specifically founded by the Southern Baptist Convention! I will demonstrate this using information from their site and other Christian sites.

Southern Baptist Roots

Derek Leman is the leader of Tikvat David. Leman calls himself a rabbi, though he is actually a Southern Baptist missionary.

Here is Leman's church planter profile from the Georgia Baptist Convention. Clearly, his founding of Hope of David (now called Tikvat David) was a way of converting Jews for the Baptists. Click Here

The Christian Index, a news outlet for the Georgia Baptist Convention, is also clear that Derek Leman is a missionary. In an article describe a Baptist women's conference, the Christian index states:

"Home missionary Derek Leman, who has helped start a messianic fellowship to reach Jewish people, reminded participants, “God is not finished saving His people.”"

Here is the link to the quote, the quote comes from the 7th paragraph. Click Here

Messianic Jewish Communications, a Messianic online store which sells Leman's books reports:

"Derek Leman, staff worker with Light of Messiah Ministries and a consultant on Jewish evangelism to the Georgia Baptist Convention, with a B.A. from Moody Bible Institute..."

A real Jewish leader would not be working for the Georgia Baptist Convention! Here is the link to the quote, the quote comes from the second paragraph: Click Here

To understand Leman, you must also understand the school he attended. Moody Bible Institute is a national training ground for Christian evangelical leaders. This is the Mission Statement of the Educational Group for Moody Bible Institute:

"Moody Bible Institute exists as an educational institution with a variety of associated ministries to advance the evangelical Christian faith. The mission of the Education Group is to educate and train individuals to proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, to promote evangelism and to serve the evangelical Christian church vocationally and/or avocationally in its worldwide ministry."

Would a real rabbi attend this school? Never! Here is the link to the mission statement: Click Here

Central Baptist Church of Douglasville, Georgia is a popular spot for Derek Leman to raise money for his missionary activities. Central Baptist says on their December 2008 and 2009 bulletin that Leman is a "Missionary to the Jewish People of Atlanta" and someone they support as a Southern Baptist missionary. Here is the link to the 2008 information; the information is on page 2 on the left side of the page, under "Go Tell": Click Here

Here is the link to the 2009 informaion; the information is on page 2 on the left side of the page, under "Whose Missing? Whose Mission?": ": Click Here

Further, the Christian website Zetify states that Hope of David and Derek Leman are part of the Southern Baptist Convention. Click Here

Lausanne Evangelism

As Derek Leman is a Christian missionary, it is natural that he has been involved in one of the more prominent Christian evangelical groups, the Lausanne Movement. The Lausanne Movement was founded by well-known evangelist Billy Graham. It reflected his goal of "unite all evangelicals in the common task of the total evangelization of the world." The quote comes from the first pargraph of the About the Lausanne Movement page, which reviews the Christian evangelical creation/goals of the Movement. Here is the link to the page: Click Here

Leman has a long history of involvement with the Lausanne Movement. He presented in multiple years at the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism. Here are links to show his participation.

1. He is listed as a presenter in the third paragraph in the section "20th Annual National Conference on Jewish Evangelism in North America; LCJE International Conference also slated for 2003": Click Here

2. He is listed as a presenter in the third paragraph in the section "Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism (LCJE) North America Annual Conference": Click Here

3. He is listed as a present in the second paragraph in the section"2005 LCJE NA Conference – San Francisco": Click Here

But Leman was not just a presenter at conferences. He was also on The International Coordinating Committee of the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism. Here is the link to the evidence, in the second paragraph on the page: Click Here

Great Sites, Priceless Information

Here are a number of great sites that counter missionaries and explain the differences in belief between Judaism and Christianity, including addressing the Biblical verses that missionaries try to use against the Jews and explaining why the missionaries are incorrect. For the most in-depth analysis of verse by verse questions, go to Messiah Truth (sections on Counter-Missionary: Multi-media training [this can be read without being "multi-media"], Knowing Your Orchard and Judaism's Answer), Jews for Judaism (in their Reference Section (please note that the Isaiah topics tend to be under "Suffering Servant" part of the "Proof Text" section) and the Q & A section of Outreach Judaism.
